Condition is everything when you're buying or selling trading card singles. Two copies of the same card can differ in value by 50% or more based on a single crease or a touch of edge wear. At TCG Nerdz, every single we list is graded by hand so you know exactly what you're getting before it ever reaches your binder. This guide breaks down our five-tier grading scale, how we inspect each card, and how condition affects price — so you can buy and sell with total confidence.

Why card condition matters

For players, condition determines whether a card is tournament-legal and how it looks across the table. For collectors and investors, condition is the single biggest driver of long-term value. A Near Mint chase card can be worth several times more than the same card in Heavily Played shape. Grading honestly protects everyone: buyers get what they pay for, and sellers get fair value for cards in great shape.

The TCG Nerdz five-tier grading scale

We grade every single on the same five-tier scale used across the hobby. Here's what each grade means and what you can expect.

Near Mint (NM)

A Near Mint card looks like it was just pulled from a fresh pack. Expect sharp corners, clean edges, a flawless surface with no scratches, and no whitening. Minor manufacturing imperfections may exist but are barely noticeable. The vast majority of our inventory is Near Mint.

Lightly Played (LP)

Lightly Played cards show minor wear only visible on close inspection — light edge wear, a small surface scratch, or very slight corner softening. Sleeved up, an LP card looks fantastic and is perfect for both play and collecting on a budget.

Moderately Played (MP)

Moderately Played cards have noticeable wear: edge or corner whitening, light scratches, minor scuffing, or small surface marks. They remain structurally sound and fully tournament-legal in a sleeve, and they offer real savings over NM copies.

Heavily Played (HP)

Heavily Played cards show significant wear — heavier whitening, visible scratches, light creasing, or surface damage — but they are complete and unaltered. HP is ideal for players who want a functional card at the lowest possible price.

Damaged (DMG)

Damaged cards have major flaws such as heavy creasing, water damage, bends, tears, or writing. They're priced to move for players who just need the card for a deck and don't mind cosmetic issues.

How we inspect every single

Grading isn't a guess. Each card is examined by hand under bright, neutral lighting, front and back. We check four things on every single:

• Corners — sharpness, softening, and whitening.
• Edges — nicks, whitening, and wear along all four sides.
• Surface — scratches, scuffs, print lines, clouding, and indentations.
• Centering — how evenly the card is printed within its borders.

When a card sits between two grades, we err on the conservative side — you should always be pleasantly surprised, never disappointed.

How condition affects price

As a rough rule of thumb, each step down the scale brings a meaningful discount — so a player chasing value can save significantly by choosing LP or MP, while collectors can lock in NM copies for the best long-term hold.

Are graded (slabbed) cards different from your condition grades?

Yes. Our grades describe raw, unslabbed singles. Professionally graded and encapsulated cards (PSA, BGS, CGC) are listed separately when available.

Do you grade both sides of the card?

Always. Back damage, whitening, and centering all factor into the final grade.
